Liturgical Choir & Choral Music
The children in School Choir take on a great role of leadership among their peers by preparing music for the school’s weekly Mass. Students in grades 1-8 are eligible to participate. Older students may elect to cantor, and instrumentalists are also encouraged to share their talent at Mass.
An important ministry in the life of the parish, the work children do in choir is a great gift and an opportunity to grow in leadership, confidence, and service. The spiritual rewards of music ministry are endless, and carry into adult life.
SJGS also offers a Choral Music elective class for students in 5th-8th grade. In Choral Music, students learn to be confident in their singing voice and demonstrate proper vocal and choral technique. Students practice sight-reading, ear-training, and music theory while creating music together. The group learns sacred music to sing at school Mass, as well as secular music (e.g. folk tunes, musical theater) as they explore new sounds and genres. Choral Music classes perform at an end-of-semester recital. There are also opportunities to visit other choral practices and concerts in our community.
