Saint Joseph Grade School Chess Club
The SJGS Chess Club, an official affiliate of the U.S. Chess Federation (USCF), is open to students in grades 1-8, from beginners to expert players. Participants learn and practice strategies of chess in preparation for tournament play. After a hiatus of several years, the club reorganized in spring 2013 with much success - over 30 students participated!
The club holds two seasons per year, in the fall and winter, each including participation in a Scholastic Chess of Indiana (SCI) tournament. Participants are encouraged to continue practicing at home or with friends out of season, and even participate in additional tournaments.
Winter 2015 Season
The Winter 2015 Season began February 6. The club competed in the SCI Team Regional in Goshen on February 21. Saint Joseph's third grade team finished 8th out of 16 teams. The club concluded its season with an intra-club tournament on March 19, with second grader Therese Walatka taking home the club crown.
Fall 2014 Season
The Fall 2014 Season began October 10 and concluded with the SCI Grade Level Championships in Fort Wayne on November 8. Eighteen SJGS students participated in the tournament held at Canterbury High School. First grader William Cremers placed 7th (out of 18) while second graders Cormac Kennedy, Nathan Skendzel, and Therese Walatka placed 11th, 12th, and 13th respectively (out of 26).
